Café Career Chat: Brief Overview:
Café Career Chat is a discussion based group focusing on employment skills and careers. High functioning adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum (aged 18-30 years) will meet with a small group of UMass Lowell students at a local cafe. Discussions will focus on skills such as job hunting, job interviews, resumes etc., and there will also be a focus on meeting others and having fun. Meetings for the next available group will take place for an hour once a week for six weeks beginning in February 2012.

What is the UML “Café Career Chat” program?
Ashleigh Hillier, Ph.D. (UML Department of Psychology) is offering “Café Career Chat” for high-functioning adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum (aged 18-30 years). Participants will meet with UMass Lowell students for a discussion based group focusing on employment skills and careers.
What is the goal of Café Career Chat?
The goal of CCC is to provide an opportunity for adolescents and young adults with ASD to learn more about employment and careers. Meetings will be informal and fun with a big emphasis on meeting other people and making connections.
What will we do in the meetings?
You will discuss various topics relating to vocational success such as:
Ř Forming realistic career goals.
Ř Job hunting skills.
Ř Job interviews.
Ř How to complete job applications.
Ř How to present yourself professionally.
Ř Getting on with co-workers and supervisors.
You will also:
Ř meet and make connections with other adolescents and young adults with ASD.
Café Career Chat will meet once a week for an hour for 6-weeks, on Mondays 3.45-5.00pm. The next available group will begin in February 2011. You will meet at the Panera Bread café on Drum Hill Road in Lowell. Parents / guardians are encouraged to drop off their son / daughter and come back at 5.00pm rather than waiting in the café.
Café Career Chat costs $50 for the six sessions (scholarships are available). You may also want to bring some money for drinks and snacks at the café.
Group facilitators meet on a weekly basis with Dr. Hillier to provide an update on progress in the group. At these meetings Dr. Hillier provides oversight, advice and intervention to the facilitators. Participants must provide proof of diagnosis to participate in Cafe Career Chat (e.g. a recent neuropsychological report, letter from psychiatrist / psychologist etc.).
