Here's info on the assignment:
Disability in Literature Online Assignment for November 26th
The University calendar has made Wednesday, November 26th a “Tuesday” class schedule. Since we will also have class on Tuesday the 25th (the day before) and because the next day is Thanksgiving, I thought I would create an assignment that would substitute for the class meeting to provide a bit more flexibility for people who have jobs and travel needs that make a “Tuesday” schedule a problem on what is – everyplace other than UML – a Wednesday.
In place of our regular class, we’ll be doing an online assignment. I’m asking you to find a current/recent article online that relates to issues of disability, and to write a page or so about the article and its significance to disability issues and our class. You will submit your assignment and your response online via e-mail by our usual class time. You are welcome to turn this assignment in early.
As I receive the article links, I’ll create a new page at the course website with the articles. I’ll send out a link to the page via the UML ISIS e-mail system (so be sure to check your UML e-mail). Everyone should take a look at at least two of the articles submitted by your classmates. I imagine there will be some repetition (and that’s not a problem). We will spend part of class when we return (Tuesday, December 2nd) talking about these articles. You do not have to read all of the articles; the plan is that everyone will have read at least three total (their own plus two discovered by other students) so that we can talk a bit about the current state of disability issues in popular culture and the news.
Here’s what you need to do for November 26th:
1) Find a recent article that interests you that is related to disability issues.
Possible topics (these are not meant to limit you – e-mail me if you have questions!:
Places you might look (again, not meant to limit; just suggestions):
2) Write up about 1 - 2 pages about the article. Here are some questions that you might address (Please note, you don’t have to address all of these; they are just suggestions!)
3) Send me an e-mail by 10:45am on Wednesday, November 26th (when our class is supposed to meet). It should include:
Sometime after noon on November 26th, but before our next class meeting on Tuesday, December 2nd: Look for an e-mail from me (to your UML/ISIS e-mail address) listing a link to the news articles; please follow at least two links on that site to read the articles your peers have sent. If I receive some early assignments, I will post the page early so that you can get this done ahead of time.
In class on Tuesday, December 2nd: Be prepared to discuss your own article and join in the conversation about other students’ articles.
You are welcome to complete this assignment early. I will send an e-mail confirmation to indicate that I have received your assignment. This assignment counts as your “attendance” for 11/26. Not submitting this assignment will count as an absence.
