Assignment info:

Disability in Literature Online Assignment for November 21st

I’ve cancelled class for Wednesday, November 21st (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving). In place of our regular class, I’m asking you to find a current/recent article that relates to issues of disability, and to write a page or so about the article and its significance to disability issues and our class. You will submit your assignment and your response paper online via e-mail by our usual class time. You are welcome to turn this assignment in early.

Once everyone in the class has sent their article links, I’ll create a new page at the course website with the articles. I’ll send out a link to the URL via the UML ISIS e-mail system (so be sure to check your UML e-mail). Everyone should take a look at two of the articles submitted by your classmates. I imagine there will be some repetition (and that’s not a problem). We will spend part of class when we return (Wednesday, November 28th) talking about these articles (in addition to what’s already on the syllabus – the film, Murderball). You do not have to read all of the articles; the plan is that everyone will have read at least three total (their own plus two discovered by other students) so that we can talk a bit about the current state of disability issues in popular culture and the news.

Here’s what you need to do by November 21st:

1) Find a recent article that interests you that is related to disability issues.

Possible topics (these are not meant to limit you – e-mail me if you have questions!:

· A specific disability

· A new treatment for a specific disability

· A profile of a person with a particular disability

· Legal cases/issues related to a disability or disability in general

Places you might look (again, not meant to limit; just suggestions):

General news websites, such as CNN or the New York Times: just do a search on the sites for disability or for a specific issue that interests you
You might also look to some other Disability news sources:
o Disability Scoop (on Developmental Disabilities) http://www.disabilityscoop.com/

o Disability.gov (USA): https://www.disability.gov/news/list

o Disabled-World (Canada): http://www.disabled-world.com/

2) Write up about 1 - 2 pages about the article. Here are some questions that you might address (Please note, you don’t have to address all of these; they are just suggestions!)

· Why is this article important?

· Why did you choose it?

· What does it tell us about the status of disability?

· How does it connect to the course (or not!)?

· What new issues does this raise?

· What follow-up questions might you ask the class about issues raised in this article?

· How did you find it?

· Why did it catch your attention?

3) Send me an e-mail by 10:45am on Wednesday, November 21st. It should include:

· The title of the article and the source (for instance “New Technology for the Blind,” from The New York Times)

· A working link to the article (if this is difficult, see if the site will let you “e-mail this article to a friend” or something like that)

· Your 1-2 pages about the article. I would prefer to have your write-up included within the body of the e-mail, so if you write it up in Word (or another program), just copy and paste your text right into the body of the e-mail message.

4) Look for an e-mail from me (to your UML/ISIS e-mail address) listing a link to the news articles; please follow at least two links on that site to read the articles your peers have sent. We’ll discuss them in class on Wednesday, November 28th.
