Ellen Swallow Richards Project

|
During
the second half of the semester, after a lecture on Urban Environmental
Reform and a guest speaker visit, you will begin developing a project
centered on documents about the work of sanitarians like Ellen Swallow
Richards. To help with this,
there will be a set of three readings on reserve (a biography of Richards
and two of her books). Your
task will be to use relevant course materials, insights and information
from the guest speaker, as well as parts of the readings on reserve to
create either, 1) an interdisciplinary lesson plan, with document-based
exercises, appropriate for high school-level students or 2) an 8-10 minute
class presentation, using various document excerpts, that includes
Powerpoint slides. Although I
will discuss some detailed criteria closer to the project start date, I
encourage you to be creative with the assignment, choosing some aspect of
public health history or Ellen Swallow Richards that particularly
interests you. A project
proposal (1-2 pages) is due Nov. 6th, a written version of the
lesson (4-5 pages) is due on Dec. 4th, and we will start with
presentations that same day. The
project is worth 30 percent of your course grade. Please use the following template for your final Lesson Plan –
