In The Poems of Milton, it is mentioned that Amaury de Bene, a medieval heretic, also felt that Heaven and Hell are states of mind.  He was often cited by atheists of Miltonís day, and by having his ideas reflected through Satanís words, Milton could be making a statement on Satanís lack of faith and condition of sin.
