The alliteration and change in meter when Satan is questioning ìwhich wayî (4:73) he should fly draws attention to the decision he has to make of remaining in Hell or returning to the former bliss of Heaven. Should Satan fly and soar back to Heaven or fly and runaway to Hell continuing on his inevitable path of destruction? Satan is caught between a rock and a hard place. He doesn't want to remain in the misery and torment of hell that he is in now, nor does he want to sacrifice his pride to return to heaven. Both have their good and bad points, Heaven would mean he would return to the glory he misses but it also means that he is now back under the control of God. If he remains in hell he will continue to live in misery and suffer, but he would now in a sense be the one in control. Satan needs to be able to fly away and be free of the consequences of either of his decisions and to have a way of starting all over, free from all his wrong choices he made.
Satan is in a state of torment when asking
this question, and the torment and misery are going to exist long after his
decision. For whichever way he
decides to go, he pride and ambition will only lead him back to where he is now,
or lead him further down the path of sin.
