But for thee I had persisted happy
Adam was content in their paradise that God created for them. He was happy enjoying the lush Garden of Eden. Adam knows that now their future is lost, gone astray. In these few words, you get that Adam is saying that if Eve wasn’t here he would be than happy, his life would be perfect. He wouldn’t have to deal with the falling out of her betrayal of him, and to God. Adam realizes that he did not have to eat the fruit, which Eve gave to him, but he did anyway. Adam ate the forbidden fruit because Eve gave it to him; she wanted in to spread the wealth, for example, the power. He trusted her, and loved her; Adam would have given his life to protect her if he could. This shows in Adam that he to is too trusting, just like Eve was too trusting toward the strange creature in Eden.
