The word BOTTOM suggests a void in Satan’s soul, one which is culminated in the creation of Hell. It shows how Satan is at rock bottom, searching desperately for a reason to go on. This motivation he finds in revenge. Satan believes that avenging himself against God, through the destruction of his most beloved creatures, will set him free. His soul is likened to a deep hole, whose bottom is in complete darkness and from which he can never escape. At the BOTTOM of Satan’s soul, there is nothing. All of his doubts about God and about himself are founded on nothing, which makes them all the harder to let go.
