Satan can’t really leave Hell. The actual gates have to be opened for him, by Sin. He cannot change his past or future, nor can he change his inner self and nature, even though he may experience moments of remorse. PLACE could signify position or rank. Satan lost his position and is now lowly. This could refer to later in the text, where Satan, as the snake, is at first an upright creature like all others, but is then forced by God to crawl on his stomach in the dirt for all eternity. This word indicates that whether Satan had won or lost his battle, it wouldn’t have changed his soul. Also, even though Satan is now inside of Eden, he is still no happier than when he was in Hell.
