It is Satan’s despair that has SLUMBERED, and is now awakened by the sight of Eden.

As long as Satan didn’t have to see Eden, he didn’t have to come to grips with the misery he was in because he didn’t have a place nearby to compare it with. Eden did not exist for Satan until he saw it. He had almost forgotten that beauty existed while living in Hell and that there was happiness elsewhere in the world. SLUMBERED shows how his eyes were shut. The word SLUMBERED does not suggest rest, but a sleep that lasted too long and continued when it shouldn’t have. When Satan is awakened, it disturbs his thoughts. He is disoriented and can’t comprehend what he sees, just like someone waking from a long dream and forgetting where they are.
