The word STIR suggests several things. One is the physical image of stirring, as in the stirring of a cauldron, which brings to mind witches and poison and other such undesirable things. Satan is poisoning himself from the inside with his own hatred. His hatred is like a spell or potion that leaves him incapable of grasping reality. Also, STIR could be used to convey the state that Satan’s emotions are in; STIR calls to mind the human impulse to feel or to experience strong emotions based on prior events. To STIR one’s memories is to evoke images of the past and uncover scars that will never be given time to heal.
