Satan is seen here as an emotional wreck. His thoughts are TROUBLED; they are all of evil origin or twisted. Satan separates himself, for a moment, from his darkness and reflects upon his emotions. Rather than unleash his anger, here he tries to get at the root cause of his misery and dredge up the reasons why he must do what he will do in Eden. TROUBLED also indicates the trouble that Satan will bring into the lives of Adam and Eve, and how Satans mere presence is a sign of evil to come. The fact that Satan is capable of having thoughts relates him to man as being a rational creature, with the ability to reflect and to feel.
