This line suggests that even Satan is fighting an inward battle against his own evil. It also brings to mind the actual physical motion of a cannon, where, after discharging a cannonball, the cannon is jerked back from the force of the shot. Likewise, Satan feels the reverberations of his own evil. It brings to mind Newton's third Law of Motion, wherein, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." This can be figuratively applied to Satan, and how, for every evil deed he commits, it takes a toll on the state of his own being, and impacts him just as greatly as it does his victims.
