The pact that God and Adam make regarding this tree also serves as a “pledge” of “obedience” and “faith.”  This shows that God really was establishing this rule as a test, or maybe even as a temptation.  Adam, however, doesn’t necessarily lose his faith, despite his obedience when he breaks the rule.  Later in the poem, he and Eve continue praying to God, proving that they haven’t lost their faith.
