"Sole" could be rewritten as its homonym "soul." The soul was a very important part of this religion, and how one lived one's life would influence if his soul went to Heaven or Hell in the afterlife. This law that God imposed on Adam and Eve, coming directly from God himself, may have been considered a command on their soul.
