CATALOG DESCRIPTION:   Structure and foundations of information systems for management from both a users and designers perspective.

Prerequisites for the course:  Computer literacy.  All students are reminded that they must have a 2.2 GPA in 6x.xxx classes in order graduate with a degree in business.

Students for whom course is intended:  This course is intended for College of Management majors and those students taking a Management minor.

PLACE IN BSBA CURRICULUM:  This course is part of the Core Curriculum, and is typically taken in the junior year.

COURSE OVERVIEW:  The value of this course is best summarized by a quotation from the text: "The revolution in business caused by the Internet and its related technologies demonstrates that information systems and information technology are essential ingredients for the success of today's internetworked business enterprise.  Therefore, as tomorrow's managers, entrepreneurs, and business professionals, business students must learn how to use and manage a variety of information technologies to revitalize business processes, improve managerial decision making, and gain competitive advantage." (O'Brien, p. v.)

Grading Details

Attendance

Students are expected to attend class regularly. Attendance will betaken daily. Students are allowed up to two weeks total absences (including absences for acceptable reasons such as doctors appointment, funerals, interviews, etc.) A half letter grade will be deducted for each additional two absences( example: you miss four classes and earn a B, your recorded grade will be BC.  Thus, if you are in a section which meets twice a week, you may miss 4 classes; if you are in a class which meets once per week, you may miss 2 classes.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

I have been at UMass Lowell since 1985. My primary teaching areas are in Operations Management, Quality Control, MIS, and Comparative Management. I have worked with numerous professional organizations, and become certified by APICS (American Production and Inventory Control Society, ASQC(American Society for Quality Control), and NAPM(Purchasing Management Association).
