44.503   Administration of Justice

Prof. Byrne                                           Issues Paper #1                                      Spring 2005

Due Date:            March 1

Description:            Clear and Cadora have offered their assessment of the impact of “Community Justice” on police, courts, corrections, and, of course, the community. Based on your examination of this issue, address the following:

(1)   Are you convinced that a “community justice” orientation toward the crime problem is an appropriate strategy/philosophy? (explain your view)

(2)   Which of the four models of community justice (partnership, intermediary, involvement, or mobilization) do you prefer? (explain your view)

(3)   Do you think it is possible to apply “community justice” strategies to one part of the criminal justice system (e.g., corrections), and not others (e.g., police, courts)? (explain using systems terminology)

(4)   Under what conditions could this strategy backfire, exacerbating the public safety problem in certain communities?

(5)   How can the potential negative consequences of this change strategy be minimized?

Length:  Five pages, typed/double-spaced, not including references/appendices.

Organization:  Issue papers should address each of these questions directly, citing source material where appropriate (see APA Style Manual).
