Al is a graduate of Marist College.  He did graduate work at Hunter University and Tufts University.  He has been a member of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell since 1966. He taught high school in New  York State from 1960 to 1966.  Since coming  to Lowell in 1966, Al has maintained his strong interest in mathematics education. In 1970, he initiated a masters degree in mathematics  specifically designed for teachers of mathematics, which continues to attract many area  teachers. He has given numerous presentations to high school faculty as well as students  over the years.  Al’s teaching and research interests are  Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra and Discrete Structures. Al has coauthored, with Ken  Levasseur,  the text  Applied Discrete Structures for Computer  Science.

Ken is a graduate of Saint Anselm College. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Rhode Island in 1980 with a research specialty of approximation theory. Since 1980 he has been a member of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at UMass Lowell. His primary interests are discrete mathematics, applied abstract algebra, and problem solving.  He is a coauthor with Al Hibbard of the   Exploring Abstract Algebra with Mathematica (EAAM) (TELOS/Springer-Verlag, 1998).  EAAM, a suite of packages accompanied by a guide and a series of group and ring labs based on the packages, is designed to help students explore concepts of abstract algebra.  Ken has been teaching online courses since 1996, developing course on Mathematica, Abstract Algebra, and Discrete Structures II.
