Inorganic Chemistry Exam I Study Topics

The following topics may be on your upcoming exam.  There may also be topics covered on the exam that are not on this list.

Chapter 2:

The penetrating and shielding characteristics of atomic orbitals (radial and radial probability functions)
Effective nuclear charge and shielding (You do not need to memorize Slater's rules)
Periodic trends, including electron configurations, atomic and ionic radii, ionization energy, electron affinity and electronegativity.  You should know the general trends, and also be able to explain common anomalies in these trends.
Chapter 3:
Lewis dot diagrams and VSEPR theory to predict molecular shapes and bond angles.
Formal charges and resonance.
Hybridization, including calculating %s or %p character in distorted molecules (You do not need to memorize the formula.)
Distortions from ideal geometry due to lone pairs or multiple bonds.
Electronegativity
Bonding behavior of elements in period 3 and below.

Chapter 4:

Use of character tables to predict:  hybridization (in chapter 5), molecular vibrations
Reduction of reducible representations.
Use of basis functions
Predicting if vibrations are IR and/or Raman active

Chapter 5:

The molecular orbital diagrams for homonuclear diatomic molecules- the drawings of molecular orbitals, calculation of bond order and paramagnetism of diatomic molecules.
