• You will need to know the specific shapes and designations of the d orbitals.
• splitting patterns of d orbitals in both octahedral and tetrahedral fields, and with tetragonal  distortions
  
• high spin vs. low spin - magnetic moments of complexes
• factors affecting ligand field strength (ligand, metal, oxidation state)
• Ligand field theory vs. crystal field theory - how the nature of the ligand affects the MO diagram
  
• an understanding of the spectrochemical series (the series will be provided)
• calculation of ligand field stabilization energy in both octahedral and tetrahedral fields
  
• distortions of octahedral complexes; the Jahn-Teller effect - what it is, when it occurs, and the strength of the effect
• square planar complexes- how the orbital splitting pattern changes as ligands along the x axis are removed
