TWO Fully-Funded Ph.D. Positions in OPTICAL NETWORKING

The Advanced Computer Networks Lab at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has two fully-funded Ph.D. positions in the area of optical networking. The two Ph.D. positions will include a stipend and Full tuition-and-fee waiver for up to 3 years, starting Sept. 2011. The position is funded through a Department of Energy (DOE) project titled, "COMMON: Coordinated Multi-Layer Multi-Domain Optical Network." Ph.D. students are expected to conduct research in developing new algorithms and protocols for supporting new services on optical networks. The project will also involve the deployment of proposed technology on the DOE's ESnet. This will involve working with researcher in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Knowledge of DOE Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) and On-demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System (OSCARS) will be a strong plus (not necessary).

Requirements:
* A Bachelors/Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. Candidates with Masters degree will be given higher priority.
* Experience in one or more of the following research areas: optical networking, Internet protocols, Quality of Service, Survivability, test-bed implementation, distributed systems, discrete-event simulations, queueing theory, and performance evaluation.
* Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
* Strong programming skills in C/C++/Java.
* Excellent communications skills (written and verbal).
* Highly motivated, innovative, and responsible, with excellent work ethics.

Desirable Attributes:
* Strong motivation to obtain a Ph.D. degree in computer engineering/computer science within 3-4 years.
* Publications in (optical) networking.
* Experience in the area of optical sub-systems and components.
* Good hands-on experience with tools, such as NS-2 and CPLEX.
* Ability to work independently, with limited direction, as well as within a team environment.

Appliction Procedure:
Applicants should hold a BS or MS in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering. For full consideration qualified candidates must send their curriculum vitae, transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate coursework with GPA, list of publications, a statement describing their qualifications, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Prof. Vinod Vokkarane at vvokkarane@umassd.edu. or:
