International Political Economy

International Political Economy has always been at the center of International Relations.  One can even say that the practice of international relations started with trade, which is an important part of international economy.  Even if you define International Relations in terms of security you can find underlying economic issues.  In this course students will learn the concepts, theories and processes of international political economy that underlie international relations.

Simulation

In the latter part of the class, students will participate in an international negotiation.  Every student will be part of a delegation of a state which will try to negotiate a free trade agreement on agricultural products.  The negotiation will take place on several levels.  Students will be experts on a specific part of the negotiation and be responsible for that part.  They will have to cooperate with their team members as well as negotiate with the experts on their topic within the international negotiations.  As a delegation they will have to deal with the government of their country which will keep a close eye on their activities.
This simulation will give students a practical insight in the reality of international political economy.
