Last and best of all God’s works, 9:896-897
In this line, Adam is referring to Eve. Since the two have been created, she was the last work of God. He calls her last and best. Best, means that she is better than he God’s only other creation. Even though she had eaten the forbidden fruit, Adam feels that she is still better than he is. In this line, Adam uses last and best to describe Eve. Milton is also careful to include God’s works. He wants to make sure that the reader is able to understand that they are both products of a higher power, and that they have disobeyed him.
