CHILD DEVELOPMENT & ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING

Summer 2005

Reflection Papers

Each Reflection Paper should be 1-2 pages typed and double spaced on the following topics.  The observations refer to the CD that was packed with your text, McDevitt & Ormrod.

Consider all stages through Early Adolescence for your reflection papers; late adolescence is optional.

Assignment 1:  Physical development and Maturation

Observe CD Video Module Physical Activity  (CD 1) to review changes from early to middle childhood.  For your reflection paper, turn to the first Video Module (CD 1) Environments.  From a bidirectional perspective, consider how the infants, preschoolers, school aged children, and young adolescents (later adolescents are optional) and their level of physical development and maturation shape their physical environment.  How are settings different by age period as a function of the children's physical skills and abilities?

Assignment 2:  Language & Literacy

Observe the modules on Cognitive Development and Memory (4 & 5 on CD 1).  Now observe modules 7 & 8  on Language in Middle Childhood and Literacy through Early Adolescence (CD 2).  Use your reflection paper to comment on aspects of cognitive and memory development that are evident in the development of language and literacy skills.

Assignment 3:  Family & Peer Relationships

Observe the module on emotional development (CD 2, module 9).  Turn to the modules 12 and 13 on Families and Friendship.  Use your reflection paper to comment on differences and similarities of families and friends across child development.  Emotional development will be a useful application here, but you need not address it directly (as in previous assignments).

Assignment 4:  Assessment

Observe Module 11, Intrinsic Motivation.  Use your reflection paper to comment on the role of well designed formative and summative in promoting and sustaining motivation in school environments for students of diverse learning styles.
