How many is enough? Note that recommended sample sizes are functions of the estimated size of the effect you seek to find, the power you would like to have in finding it, and the "noise" in your data--including issues related to measurement and to population variability. The more variable the population, the larger the sample needed for reliable parameter estimation. Greater sample size is required to achieve greater power. Smaller effects require larger samples to detect reliably. See Getting the Sample Size Right, an introductory discussion by Miles.
