M.S. RESEARCH:
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is one of the prominent techniques for organic structural elucidation. A new application of NMR under examination is the quantitative analysis of metal species in aqueous systems using solvent suppression methods. Copper is chosen as the metal under investigation because of its abundance and environmental importance. By controlling pH of the system, the concentration of Copper (II) ion is determined in the presence of known complexing agent such as EDTA. Once the nature and kinetics of the complexes are obtained, the results can be applied to unknown complexing agents like Humic Substances.
