Is a GRE score required for the MS Math program?
Answer: No.
Can English requirements such as TOEFL or IELTS be waived?
Answer: The department does not have separate policy on language requirements and all applicants must follow the general language requirements by the university.
Do I need a separate application for graduate scholarships or teaching assistant positions?
Answer: No. All admitted students will be considered for available scholarships and/or teaching assistantships, no further application is necessary.
How many graduate teaching assistant positions are there in your program?
Answer: Each semester, we have a limited number of teaching assistantship positions. All graduate students will be automatically considered and no further application is necessary. We will reach out only to candidates who are selected for an interview.
What is the deadline for applying to this program?
Answer: We accept applications on a rolling basis and there is no deadline. However, please allow at least one month for processing time.
What is the deadline to be considered for funding such as teaching assistantship?
Answer: There is no deadline. However, we start reviewing teaching assistant positions a few months before the semester.
What does a teaching assistantship include?
Answer: The main benefits of a teaching assistantship include the tuition for up to 9 graduate credits per semester and monthly stipends during the semester.
What are the responsibility of teaching assistants?
Answer: Teaching assistants are assigned to recitations or lectures of Pre-Calculus classes, or as graders and tutors, based on the need of the department. The total workload is 18 hours a week.
Do you have research assistantships available?
Answer: No. Research assistantships are provided by faculty based on their available funding. The department does not have a research assistantship program.
Do I need to secure a supervisor before applying to the MS program?
Answer: No.
What is the minimum GPA required for your graduate program?
Answer: A GPA of 3.0 or above is required.
Do I need a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics in order to apply?
Answer: Although a four-year undergraduate degree in Mathematics is preferred, we also consider applicants from related fields with satisfactory mathematics background.
Can I submit my application with an unofficial transcript?
Answer: You may submit an unofficial transcript with your application. However, an official transcript should be available if requested by the university.
Can I apply to the Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics program?
Answer: The Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics program is jointly offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Miner School of Computer and Information Science. This program is part of the Ph.D. program in Computer Science and is administed by the Miner School of Computer and Information Science. Applicants for this program must have sufficient background in both mathematics and computer science. Candidates in this program must pass both Qualifying Exams in mathematics and computer science.
How do I get an application fee waiver?
Answer: You must attend a Graduate Open House. Details can be found here: https://www.uml.edu/grad/events/open-house.aspx. The department does not give out application fee waivers, please contact Graduate_Admissions@uml.edu instead.
