COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course focuses on the primary use of the Internet, namely Web browsing (search engines, portals, etc.), as well as the many other applications of the Internet, such as: e-mail, file transfer, e-commerce, message boards, mailing lists, social networking, chat rooms, instant messaging, and Internet telephony. Internet security, ethics, and privacy are also discussed including an introduction to Computer Forensics. Students will complete hands-on exercises, including construction of their personal web page, blog, and wiki.

There is no textbook for this class. Handouts will be distributed as well as links to resources on the Web as needed.

Hands-On Exercises/Participation: We will be meeting 26 times throughout the semester. Each day that you attend class, you earn a point for participation, up to 25 points. Each point counts as a single point toward your final grade. You can miss one class and still earn the full 25 points for participation.

The midterm and final exams will be taken in class, possibly online. The exams will consist of a series of multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank and short answer type questions. There will be no make-ups for the midterm or final exams, unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. The midterm exam will take place on March 13th.   The final exam will take place on Tuesday, May 13th.

The Blog will be a Web log (blog) that you create! Each student will design his/her own blog, by following simple instructions. Awards will be presented at the end of the semester to those students who's blogs get the most unique posts. (Details to follow.) Blogs are due on April 1st. Late blogs pages will lose a point for each day that it is late.

The Web Page will be a home page that you design! Each student will design his/her own home page, by following simple instructions. Links, images, and formatting will be added to make the home page somewhat robust. HTML code will be introduced and briefly discussed. Web pages are due on April 24th. Late Web pages will lose a point for each day that it is late.

Extra Credit: You will have an opportunity to earn 4 extra credit points towards your final course grade throughout the semester. Details to follow.
