Chapter 12-13 (sections 13.2-3, 13.5 and 13.7) Solids & Liquids
DEFINE:
- Physical properties of liquids - viscosity, surface tension, boiling point, capillary action, and vapor pressure
- Physical properties of solids
- How X-ray diffraction (XRD) elucidates crystal structure
- All phases changes and their associated enthalpies:
- fusion/freezing; vaporization/condensation; sublimation/deposition
DO:
- Determine intermolecular forces
- Determine trends in liquid properties in “Define” section above
- Interpret heating/cooling curves
- Interpret a phase change diagram
- Relate the properties of the diamond, graphite, and nanotube forms of carbon to the bonding and structure of these solids
CALCULATE:
- Total heat required for successive phase changes (solid to liquid to gas)
