Chapter 12-13 (sections 13.2-3, 13.5 and 13.7) Solids & Liquids

DEFINE:

• Physical properties of liquids - viscosity, surface tension, boiling point, capillary action, and vapor pressure
• Physical properties of solids
• How X-ray diffraction (XRD) elucidates crystal structure
• All phases changes and their associated enthalpies:
• fusion/freezing; vaporization/condensation; sublimation/deposition

DO:

• Determine intermolecular forces
• Determine trends in liquid properties in “Define” section above
• Interpret heating/cooling curves
• Interpret a phase change diagram
• Relate the properties of the diamond, graphite, and nanotube forms of carbon to the bonding and structure of these solids

CALCULATE:

• Total heat required for successive phase changes (solid to liquid to gas)
