ASSIGNMENT #9               Due: Monday, 4/10

Topic: Stress Management: Meditation, Time Management, Nutrition and Exercise

Answer each of the following questions in a short paragraph (no more than 50-75 words each, for a total of 2-3 pages double-spaced).  The (*) notation after a question means that it relates to material presented only or mostly in class.

1. Explain the three basic ways in which holistic approaches to health and coping differ from other models. (*)

2. What did Wallace and Benson’s studies reveal about the effects of Transcendental Meditation?

3. Evaluate the evidence for whether or not TM has positive effects on health and illness.

4. Why is biofeedback supposed to be helpful, and does the evidence show that it actually is?

5. Explain one reason why smart people don’t always exhibit smart decision-making. (*)

6. Consider what Rice calls the “seven deadly sins of time mismanagement;” select two and describe how you can relate them to your own misuse of time.

7. What does it mean to say that diet and stress have a reciprocal relationship?

8. What does it mean to say that fats in our diet are both good and bad?

9. What is set-point theory and what is its significance?

10. Think of a personal self-improvement goal you’ve wanted to set for yourself (or, if you’re already perfect, make one up); drawing upon Chapter 15 in Rice, identify two specific strategies that would probably increase your chances for success.
