Topic: Health Promotion: Injuries, Smoking and Alcohol and Drug Use

Answer each of the following questions in a short paragraph (no more than 50-75 words each, for a total of 2-3 pages double-spaced).  The (*) notation after a question means that it relates to material presented only or mostly in class.

1. What is the fundamental assumption of health promotion? (*)

2. Briefly summarize some of the risk factors that can be linked to unintentional injuries in the U.S. today.

3. Describe and give an example of each of the three basic strategies for preventing unintentional injuries.

4. Contrast individual and societal approaches to preventing violence, and give one example to illustrate each approach. (*)

5. Briefly summarize what is currently known about why smoking is such a serious health risk.

6. Explain the difference between a social learning and the nicotine addiction model of smoking.

7. What methods appear to be successful in smoking cessation programs?

8. What is the key assumption in the disease model of problem drinking, and what is the evidence for or against it?

9. Briefly summarize some of the cognitive factors that may play an important role in problem drinking.

10. Briefly summarize the debate over abstinence vs. controlled drinking.
