Topic: Health Promotion: Weight Control and Exercise

Answer each of the following questions in a short paragraph (no more than 50-75 words each, for a total of 2-3 pages double-spaced).  The (*) notation after a question means that it relates to material presented only or mostly in class.

1. Briefly summarize the main findings from the experimental studies of starvation and overeating by Keys and Sims.

2. What evidence supports the setpoint model as an explanation for obesity, and what arguments are there against it?

3. Explain the positive incentives model of obesity and how it differs from the setpoint model.

4. How does restraint theory attempt to explain obesity? (*)

5. Summarize what is currently known about weight as a risk factor for health problems.

6. Briefly summarize what works and what doesn’t work to bring about lasting weight loss.

7. There are fundamentally two different forms of exercise; what are they, and how do they differ?

8. How does exercise help with weight control?

9. Exercise is most strongly recommended for improving cardiovascular health; what are the benefits, and how strong is the evidence that they are real?

10. Some recent studies suggest that exercise may have psychological benefits; what is the evidence?
