Exceptional graduate students are currently being considered for RA positions in the area of optical networking. The Advanced Computer Networks Lab at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has two fully-funded research assistantships for Ph.D. students in the area of optical networking. The research assistantships include a stipend and a complete tuition waiver for up to 3 years, starting Sept. 2007. The position will include research on an NSF-funded project titled, "Service-Oriented Optical Networks (SOON)."
Research assistants are expected to conduct research in developing new algorithms and protocols for supporting reliable transport in all-optical networks. The project will also result in the development of analytical models for evaluating these algorithms and protocols. The proposed activity will result in a framework and an architecture for deploying a wide range of services in optical networks in order to support the requirements of the most demanding next-generation applications.
Requirements:
* A Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering,
or related fields. Candidates with Masters degree will be given higher priority.
* Experience in one or more of the following research areas: optical networking,
Internet protocols, distributed systems, discrete-event simulations, queueing
theory, and performance evaluation.
* Strong programming skills in C/C++ and Java.
* Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
* Excellent communications skills (written and verbal).
* Highly motivated, innovative, and responsible, with excellent work ethics.
Desirable Attributes:
* Strong motivation to obtain a Ph.D. degree in computer engineering/computer
science within 3-4 years.
* Publications in (optical) networking.
* Good hands-on experience with tools, such as NS-2 and CPLEX.
* Ability to work independently, with limited direction, as well as within a
team environment.
* Experience in research environments a strong plus.
* International students are welcome.
Interested candidates should supply the following:
1. Transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate coursework.
2. Statement of research interest. This statement must explain both the motivation
and goals for RA activity.
In particular, the statement must explain how research experience in optical
networking would help to achieve
the applicant’s long-term professional goals. Identify background experience
relevant for the position.
3. Minimum of three references that can provide recent and applicable feedback
on work capability.
There is no closing date for applications. The positions will be filled as
soon as we find suitable candidates.
