COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This course will focus on a more detailed description of the bonding and structure of a variety of inorganic compounds.  Topics include:  metallic and common ionic crystal structures, valence-bond and molecular orbital theory, molecular symmetry and its relationship to spectroscopy, Lewis acids and bases, transition metal complexes and their electronic spectra.

GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION:


Prerequisite:  Physical Chemistry

Attendance:  Attendance at all class meetings is required.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned, usually weekly, in class, and assignments will also be posted on this web site under the Class Schedule heading.  Solutions to the homework will be  posted, after the due date, in the "Assignments" section of the Class Schedule web page. Just click on the appropriate assignment, and the solutions should appear.

Examinations:  Three hourly exams will be given (usually) during regular class meetings as indicated on the schedule.  Students should bring a scientific calculator to all examinations.  If an hourly examination is missed, you must notify the instructor within 48 hours of the missed exam.  Only students with documented absences for illness, participation in a University activity, etc. will be permitted to take a make-up exam.  all other absences will result in an exam grade of zero.  See Grading Policy section below.

GRADING POLICY:

 Three hourly examinations will be given in addition to a comprehensive final examination.  You must take all three hourly exams.  Unannounced quizzes may be given during the semester.  You may substitute the grade of a section of the final exam for the score of one of your hourly exams.  Anyone who scores 90% or above on all three hourly exams will be exempt from taking the final exam.  Final grades will be computed on the following basis:
