Dr. Xingwei Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Expertise: Xingwei (Vivian) Wang received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2006. Then she joined UMass Lowell as an Assistant Professor in 2006. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and then to Full Professor in 2016. She is the recipient of the 2010 NSF CAREER award and the 2008 Massachusetts Life Science Center New Investigator Research Award. Her research interests include optical bio-sensing and biomedical devices, optical sensors, optical imaging, MEMS technology and electromagnetic wave propagation. She has published over 80 papers in journals and conference proceedings on design, fabrication and characterization of optical sensors and devices.

Dr. Poorna Marthi

Dr. Poorna Marthi was born in Hyderabad, India, in 1990. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and M.S. in computer engineering from University of Massachusetts, Lowell in 2017 and 2014, respectively. Currently, he is working as a research associate on multiple projects in Prof. Wang's lab, including biosensors, structural health monitoring, BODTR, etc.

During 2012–2013, he was a research contractor at Analog Devices Inc., MA, USA. In the summer of 2014, he worked as a DFT Intern Engineer at International Rectifier, MA, USA. His research interests include fiber optic sensors, microprocessors and embedded systems, low power memories, digital design and mixed-signal VLSI design, computer architecture and ballistic nanodevices and circuits.

Xu Guo

Xu Guo received his Bachelor's degree from University of Science and Technology of China in 2015. He is now a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UMass Lowell.

Cong Du

Cong Du received his Masters degree from North University of China in 2015. He is a Ph.D candidate from Biomedical and Biotechnology Program in the Dep. of Electrical and Computer Eng., UMass Lowell. Currently, he is researching optic sensors, image processing, and non-invasive detection.

Jingcheng Zhou

Jingcheng Zhou received his Masters degree from University of Bridgeport in 2014. He is a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnology, UMass Lowell. Zhengwei Wu

Zhengwei Wu received his Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 2009. He studied at Liquid Crystal Institute of Kent State University as graduate student from 2010 to 2011. He is currently a Ph.D student in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology program, UMass Lowell.

Dr. Nan Wu (PhD student: 2008~2012, Postdoctal researcher: 2012~2016)

Nan Wu received his PhD degree from UMass Lowell in 2012. He was a post doctoral research associate in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UMass Lowell (2012-2016). Nan Wu passed his Ph.D. defense, "Study of fiber optic ultrasound transducer through photoacoustic principle" on 08/2012. Nan Wu received his Masters degree from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 2008, and got his Bachelor degree from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2006. His research interests are fiber optic sensors, photoacoustic generators, FP fiber sensors.

Siwen Bi

Siwen Bi received her Bachelor’s degree from Shenyang University of Chemical Technology (SUCT), China, in Polymer Material & Engineering, in 2014. Dr. Shizhe Chen

Shizhe Chen was a Visiting Scholar in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UMass Lowell. He received his master degree in Mechatronics and Ph.D degree in Instrument Science and Technology from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, at 2002 and 2006 respectively. He has worked in Shandong Academy of Sciences Institute of Oceanographic Instrumentation, China. His research interests are photoelectric detection technology, optical sensors, ocean environmental observation technology.

Armand Chery

Armand was an undergraduate REU student, studying to acquire his bachelors and masters degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics with a minor in Biochemistry.  His research interests are in Nanotechnology and its applications in biomedical devices, electronics, metamaterials, and robotics. He comes with research experience in the characterization, deposition, and fabrication of organic FETs working at Northeastern University in the Center for High Rate Nanomanufacturing.

Aldo Beqiraj

Steven Tang

Steven was a rising senior at the Nashoba Regional High School in Bolton, MA who is interested in math and science. He did a summer research internship at UMass Lowell on the use of fiber optic sensors in medical applications.

Dr. Ye Tian (PhD student: 1/2009~12/2013)

Ye Tian received his Phd degree from Umass-Lowell in 2013. Ye Tian passed his Ph.D. defense, "Numerical simulations and a novel fabrication approach for fiber-optic ultrasound generators" on 11/18/2013. Ye Tian received his Masters degree from the Institute of Modern Optics of Nankai University in 2008, and got his Bachelor degree in Communication Engineering from Nankai University of China in 2005. Dr. Xiaotian Zou (PhD student: 2010~2013)

Xiaotian Zou received his PhD degree in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from Umass-Lowell in 2013. He passed his Ph.D. defense, "Novel diagnostics technology with photoacoustic fiber optic transducers" on 9/17/2013. Xiaotian Zou received his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 2010. Dr. Wenhui Wang (Research Fellow: 4/2007~1/2010)

Dr. Wenhui Wang received his bachelor and master degrees from Zhejiang University, China and Ph.D degrees in microelectronics and solid state electronics from Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, China in 2004. He was a post doctoral research  associate in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UMass Lowell. His research interests are biosensor, MEMS, passive optical and Microfluidics devices.

Charles J Guthy (Master student: 2008~2010)

Charles Guthy received his Master degree from UMass-Lowell in 2010. In the past, he has assisted research efforts by building test fixtures and LED drivers, and editing CEMOS publications.  He volunteers at CEMOS as needed, and is currently involved in the design and testing of a fiber optic temperature sensor that will be used to monitor the temperature of a drill bit as it cuts through a titanium alloy workpiece. His research interests include sensors, both resistive and capacitive, nanotechnology, and medical devices. He has worked for Setra Systems in Boxborough, MA, Philips Healthcare in Andover, MA, and Radant MEMS in Stow, MA.

Dr. Xiaodong Ma (PhD student: 9/2007~8/2010)

Xiaodong Ma received his Ph.D degree in the Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology Doctoral Program (BME&BT) at UMASS Lowell. He did his dissertation at VasoTech, Inc. on the research and development of a Drug-Eluting Stent (DES), a solution to Cardiovascular Artery Diseases (CAD). His research interests are Drug-Eluting Stents (DES), Optical Biosensors, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS), and Bio-nanopatterning.

Current affiliation: Senior Research Engineer, Covidien.

Dr. Kai Sun (Research Fellow: 4/2010~10/2010)

Dr. Kai Sun worked as a research fellow in our group. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 2008, and his Masters degree in Physics from Peking University, China in 2001. From 2007 to 2009, he worked as a senior process integration engineer in Mosel Vitelic Corp., San Jose, California, where he worked on developing 65nm CMOS Flash memory technology and CMOS image sensor technology. His research interests are optical fiber devices, MEMS devices, self-assembled nanostructures, optical and electrical characterization of optoelectronic materials and devices.

Dr. Hongtao Zhang (Research Fellow: 12/2010~8/2011)

Dr. Hongtao Zhang worked as a research fellow in our group. He respectively obtained his Ph.D. degree from Physics department in Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, 2009 and his M.S. in Theoretical Physics from Peking University (PKU) in 2002. From 2009 to 2010, he worked for a start-up in North New Jersey as a research scientist. His research interests include optical fiber sensing technology and quantum physics.
