Textbook: General Chemistry, Atoms First, 1st Edition, J.E.McMurry, R.C. Fay,
Prentice Hall, 2010. ISBN 978-0-321-57163-2
Note: Concurrent enrollment in the laboratory course, 84.123 is required.
Required materials: Textbook, Scientific calculator, Mastering Chemistry software,
Periodic table [use the one in the book or a copy, or get one from the web, e.g. http://physics.nist.gov/PhysRefData/PerTable/ ]
Optional materials: Student study/answer guide.
Quizes and Exams: I reserve the right to give a short pop quiz on any day. They will be equal to 1 quiz grade when combined.
There will be a quiz at the end of each week..
Your two lowest quiz grades will be dropped.
There will be no make-ups for quizzes except under special circumstance such as an extended illness where more than 2 quizzes will be missed. (Doctor's note required)
There will be a comprehensive final exam, the date and time of which will be announced during the semester.
Homework:
All homework’s must be done using Mastering Chemistry and submitted electronically. Homework assignments will be assigned for each chapter and will be due typically 7 to 10 days after the assignment has been posted. No extensions on homework due dates will be made except for extended illness (Doctor's note required)
Course grade based upon the following formula:
40% quizzes
30% homework
30% final exam
A > 93%, A- 90-93%, B+ 87-89%, B 83-86%, B- 80-82%, C+ 77-79%, C 73-76%, C- 70-72%, D+ 66-69%, D 60-65%, F <60%
