How does leadership different from management?

  • "have you heard of a world manager? world leader? Yes."
  • managers more concerned with stability and predictability, emphasize policies and procedures, set short-term goals Control, "ask how and when, not to ask why or create change "(Nanus, 1992).
  • managers are appointed, given role. This authority gives power over subordinates.
  • can't appoint a leader. Followers identify leaders. "True leaders are selected by groups looking for someone to lead them."
  • "..The power of leadership come primarily from the values, traits, and skills of the individuals were are recognized as leaders."
  • organization members with no formal titles can be leaders
  • Don't depend on official power and procedures.
  • "Leaders see organizations being driven by people, not rules, and rely on intrinsic values and rewards to direct workers."
  • Motivate people to achieve more.
