- What we will cover this week
(based on Ch 2. of Principles
of Security Management)
How
does leadership different from management?
- "have you heard of a world
manager? world leader? Yes."
- managers more concerned with
stability and predictability, emphasize policies and procedures,
set short-term goals Control, "ask how and when, not to
ask why or create change "(Nanus, 1992).
- managers are appointed, given
role. This authority gives power over subordinates.
- can't appoint a leader. Followers
identify leaders. "True leaders are selected by groups
looking for someone to lead them."
- "..The power of leadership
come primarily from the values, traits, and skills of the individuals
were are recognized as leaders."
- organization members with no
formal titles can be leaders
- Don't depend on official power
and procedures.
- "Leaders see organizations
being driven by people, not rules, and rely on intrinsic values
and rewards to direct workers."
- Motivate people to achieve more.
