Defining discipline (continued)
Stages:

  • counseling
  • oral reprimands
  • written warnings
  • suspensions
(should be written on the organization's letterhead, and a copy should be given to the employee. This letter should be kept in the employee's personnel file in order to maintain an accurate disciplinary record and to serve as a link in the progressive disciplinary process, if needed at a later time."
  • demotions
  • transfers
  • terminations/dismissals

Positive discipline:
".. goal is to correct future behavior rather than punish previous behaviors, educate employees, and make individuals accountable for their actions."
2 types of positive discipline:

  • decision days: give the worker a day off to reflect on and decide whether to solve and correct problem and return with commitment to meet standards. Not a suspension.
  • decisional leave: also require employee to come back with written plan to change behavior, and how worker will assure it won't happen again.

Both may either be paid or unpaid.

"The use of positive discipline will require employers to develop and educate their managerial staff on coaching and counseling techniques."
