INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICSFALL 2010
Physics I Twitter account: @UMLPhysicsIF10 On Facebook, search for "UML Physics I F2010" The Physics I Facebook page and Twitter feeds allow me to get important information to you in real time. I will sometimes send out hints for HW problems via Twitter, or answer common questions. The Facebook page should also allow you to interact with your classmates, discuss HW problems, or concepts from Lecture/Section. You are not required to join either, though I think it will help. Textbook and Supplemental Materials The textbook for the course is Giancoli's Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 4th Ed. (ISBN: 0-13-227358-6). There are various Physics I packages available at the UML Bookstore. Click the link above to see the packages offered by the bookstore. THIS SEMESTER (F10), ALL HOMEWORK WILL BE DONE ONLINE, which means you wil also have to purchase access to masteringphysics.com. However, this also means that you are NOT required to have the latest edition of the text. In fact, you could choose to use a different text entirely, since all HW problems will come from masteringphysics. Please note that if you choose to buy the text online or used, you will need to purchase the PRS clickers for this course at the bookstore. The clickers are included in the textbook package at the bookstore. Web page with semster schedule and lecture contents. Introduction to the Physics I team, with Office Hours and Locations, Recitations Sections, and contact information for each recitation instructor. Outlines course policies, including (un)excused absences, grading, co/prerequisites, course outline, textbook and supplemental materials, grade determination, etc.
Homework Sets and Recitation Problems (95.141) List of required problems and due dates for each homework set, also lists recommended problems to be coveredin recitation sections. Remember, all homework, both lecture prep and regular, is to be done on-line at www.masteringphysics.com. Link to online course component at www.masteringphysics.com. Find the course WASSERMANF10. Here you will find a list of the lecture preparation and regular homework problems. Make sure you complete the lecture prep problems before each lecture, and the regular homeworks before their due dates (usually the last day of the class week). Info Sheet for registering at masteringphysics.com Lecture notes will be posted here before each class. They will consist of the basic ppt framework I will use for lecture, but will not include the ink annotations I make in class. Many students like to print these before lecture and fill them in as I make the ink annotations during lecture. Physics Tutoring Center This semester, we will be running a tutoring center in the Physics Department to help you with your 95.141 HW. the center will be staffed ~4 hrs per day by our two 95.141 TA's: Prattusha and Hardeep. They will help you understand the homework, and work through any masteringphysics glitches. The tutoring room will be directly across from the desks of the Physics Department administrative assistants, in the Physics Dept., on the first floor of Olney. The Hours for the Physics Department Tutoring Center are tentatively: Monday: 2-6pm Tuesday: 2-6 pm Wednesday: 10-11 am, 2-4 pm Thursday: 1-6 pm Friday: 9-11 am, 2-5 pm Here you will find previous years' mid-term exams to help you study for this years exams. DO NOT use these as your primary study tool. Some of these come from a Physics I course that was taught by a different professor, so there is no guarantee that the material or level of difficulty is exactly the same!
