Supervisory problems (continued)

• Supervisor shouldn't become emotionally involved: if supervisor becomes angry, workers see that as having lost control of the situation.
• they need to be able to recognize signsof problems sufch as alcholoism or drug use, and refer employee to EAP program or an external counseling service
• must respect confidentiality, except when the situation may affect the organization.
• How to reduce resistance:
  • communicate need for degree of worker independence
  • give employees sense of freedom to make mistakes and take risks
  • reinforce employees's responsibility to set and meet performance goals
  • praise employees for performance, and explain why they're praised
